Description

Double Bar Rabbitfish (Siganus virgatus)

The Double Bar Rabbitfish is a striking and highly functional marine fish known for its elegant silver body, bold black facial bars, and excellent algae-grazing abilities. Named for the two dark vertical bands across its face and head, this species combines visual appeal with practical benefits, making it a popular addition to larger reef and marine aquariums.

Native to the Indo-Pacific region, Double Bar Rabbitfish inhabit coastal reefs, lagoons, and seagrass beds where they spend their time grazing on algae and marine vegetation. In the aquarium, they are active swimmers that constantly patrol rockwork and open areas, helping control nuisance algae while adding movement and personality to the tank.

Rabbitfish are generally peaceful and hardy, adapting well to aquarium life when provided with ample swimming space and a varied herbivorous diet.

Why You’ll Love the Double Bar Rabbitfish

  • Distinctive silver body with bold black facial bars
  • Excellent natural algae grazer
  • Active swimmer with calm temperament
  • Reef safe with caution in mixed reef setups
  • Hardy and adaptable once established

Appearance & Behaviour

Double Bar Rabbitfish can grow to around 20–25 cm as adults. Their bodies are sleek and laterally compressed, featuring a silver to pale grey base colour with vivid yellow accents and two prominent black bars running vertically across the face.

They are peaceful, active fish that spend most of their day grazing algae from rocks and décor. When startled or stressed, their coloration may become paler or mottled, which is normal behaviour for rabbitfish species.

Like all rabbitfish, they possess venomous dorsal spines used for defense. While not aggressive, care should be taken during handling or maintenance to avoid accidental stings.

Tank Requirements & Care

Double Bar Rabbitfish require a spacious, mature marine aquarium with stable water conditions and ample swimming room.

Tank Size:
Minimum 400–500 litres

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 24–27°C
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Salinity: 1.023–1.025

Environment:

  • Plenty of live rock for grazing
  • Open swimming space
  • Moderate to strong water flow
  • Secure lid or covered tank

A mature reef or fish-only system with natural algae growth is ideal.

Feeding

Double Bar Rabbitfish are primarily herbivores and require a plant-rich diet.

Recommended foods include:

  • Marine algae and seaweed sheets (nori)
  • Algae-based pellets and flakes
  • Spirulina foods
  • Occasional vegetable matter
  • Supplemental frozen foods in moderation

Regular feeding helps reduce the likelihood of coral nipping in reef aquariums.

Reef Compatibility

Double Bar Rabbitfish are generally considered reef safe with caution.

They coexist well with most reef-safe fish, including:

  • Tangs
  • Clownfish
  • Wrasses
  • Gobies
  • Angelfish (in larger systems)
  • Blennies and peaceful reef fish

Use caution with:

  • Soft corals and fleshy LPS corals if underfed
  • Aggressive territorial fish
  • Very small nano species in large active systems

Most individuals behave well in reef tanks when adequately fed.
