Description
Eibli Angelfish (Centropyge eibli)
The Eibli Angelfish is a beautiful and highly distinctive dwarf angelfish admired for its elegant striped pattern, orange tail, and active personality. Featuring a soft grey to silver body crossed with dark vertical striping and accented by vibrant orange highlights, this species adds both movement and sophistication to reef and marine aquariums.
Native to the Indo-Pacific region, Eibli Angelfish inhabit reef slopes and lagoons where they weave through rockwork while grazing on algae, sponge material, and biofilm. In the aquarium, they are constantly active, exploring caves and rock structures throughout the day.
As one of the larger dwarf angelfish species, the Eibli combines the bold presence of a larger angelfish with the manageable size and adaptability of the Centropyge group, making it a popular choice for established marine systems.
Why You’ll Love the Eibli Angelfish
- Elegant striped body with vibrant orange accents
- Active and constantly exploring rockwork
- Hardy and adaptable once established
- Excellent focal fish for reef and marine aquariums
- Adds colour and personality without requiring massive tank sizes
Appearance & Behaviour
The Eibli Angelfish typically grow to around 12–15 cm and develop a sleek oval body shape with flowing fins. Their most recognisable feature is the series of vertical dark stripes across a pale silver-grey body, combined with orange edging and a bright orange tail.
They are active and semi-territorial, especially toward other dwarf angelfish or similarly shaped fish. In larger aquariums with plenty of hiding spaces, they generally coexist well with a wide variety of reef-safe tankmates.
Like many dwarf angels, they spend much of their time grazing surfaces and investigating rock crevices for food.
Tank Requirements & Care
Eibli Angelfish thrive in mature marine aquariums with stable water quality and abundant live rock.
Tank Size:
Minimum 250–300 litres
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Salinity: 1.023–1.025
Environment:
- Plenty of live rock and caves
- Open swimming areas
- Moderate water flow
- Established aquarium with natural grazing opportunities

Recommended foods include:
- Marine angelfish preparations containing sponge material
- Spirulina and algae-based foods
- Frozen mysis shrimp and brine shrimp
- High-quality marine pellets and flakes
Frequent varied feeding helps maintain colouration and reduce coral nipping tendencies.
Reef Compatibility
Eibli Angelfish are considered reef safe with caution. While many individuals coexist peacefully in reef aquariums, some may nip at soft corals, zoanthids, fleshy LPS corals, and clam mantles, particularly if underfed or kept in smaller systems with limited grazing opportunities.
They are generally compatible with:
- Tangs
- Wrasses
- Clownfish
- Gobies
- Blennies
- Other peaceful reef fish
Use caution with:
- Zoanthids
- LPS corals
- Soft corals
- Clams
Providing a varied diet and ample live rock for natural grazing may help reduce coral nipping behaviour, but individual temperament can vary significantly.
