Anubias Barteri

The Anubias barteri plant is a very popular plant in the aquarium hobby due to its visual appeal and how easy it is to care for.  This plant will grow in just about any type of lighting, but its leaves grow more quickly and densely under high-intensity lighting.  Anubias barteri can tolerate just about any type of water hardness and pH levels; however, it tends to do best in soft water with a pH of 6.5 to 7.5.  It can also grow in a wide range of water temperatures, but we recommend keeping it in water that is anywhere from 72° to 82° F for the best growth results.

🌿 Anubias Barteri

Hardy Aquarium Classic (Variety Unknown)

Anubias barteri is one of the most beloved and enduring aquarium plants in the hobby — a true classic known for its glossy green leaves, resilience, and timeless beauty. This particular group of Anubias arrived labelled as “Round Mini Leaf”, though the form closely resembles Anubias nana or another compact variety of Anubias barteri.

Because Anubias varieties can be difficult to distinguish by leaf shape alone, we’ve listed these as Anubias barteri (variety unknown).  Whichever variety it turns out to be, this plant offers the same hardy, undemanding nature Anubias are famous for.

💚 Why You’ll Love It

  • 🌿 Extremely Hardy: Thrives in a wide range of water parameters — perfect for beginners or low-tech tanks.
  • 🪸 Algae-Resistant Leaves: Thick, waxy foliage resists algae and remains lush and healthy even under lower light.
  • 🪵 Versatile Placement: Attach to driftwood, rocks, or aquarium decor for natural-looking aquascapes.
  • 🐟 Fish & Shrimp Friendly: Provides resting and grazing surfaces for shrimp, plecos, and small fish.
  • 🌞 Low Maintenance: Slow growth means less trimming and upkeep.
  • 💧 Tolerates Low Light: Thrives even in shaded areas of your aquarium.

🌱 Care & Placement

💡 Lighting:
Prefers low to moderate light. Too much direct light can lead to algae buildup on the leaves — ideal placement is under shade from taller plants or hardscape.

🫧 CO₂ Requirements:
CO₂ injection is not required, though it can improve growth and leaf size slightly. Perfectly suitable for low-tech aquariums.

🪨 Substrate:
Do not bury the rhizome in the substrate as it will rot. Instead, attach it to wood, stone, or decor using thread, cable ties, or aquarium-safe glue until roots anchor naturally.

🌡️ Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 22–28 °C
  • pH: 6.0–8.0
  • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
  • Tank Position: Foreground to midground

🌿 Growth Rate:
Slow-growing — new leaves appear every few weeks depending on lighting and nutrients.

✂️ Propagation:
Cut or divide the rhizome into sections with a few leaves attached. Each piece will continue growing into a new plant.

🌾 Placement Tips:
Use this Anubias on hardscape or as a focal point cluster. It adds depth and lush greenery to wood- or stone-based aquascapes and does beautifully in nano tanks, shrimp tanks, and community setups.

🪴 Aquascaping Inspiration

Anubias barteri’s bold green tones and broad leaves make it a timeless choice for both beginner and professional aquascapers. Pair it with slow-growing companions like Bucephalandra, Cryptocoryne, or Java Fern for a cohesive, natural look.

Its sturdy structure also complements driftwood layouts, biotope aquariums, or nature-style scapes with moss and ferns. The leaves contrast beautifully against finer plants or red species such as Ludwigia or Alternanthera. For nano aquariums, a few pieces of Anubias on small stones instantly create a mature, lush effect without needing frequent trimming.
