Seachem Cupramine

Price range: R210,00 through R320,00

Cupramine™ effectively eradicates Oodinium, Cryptocaryon, Amyloodinium, Ichthyophthirius, and other ectoparasites of both freshwater and marine fish. It is superior to copper sulfate, chloride & citrate: it is non-acidic, less toxic to fish, remains in solution, and does not contaminate the filter bed. It is superior to chelates: it is fully charged (ionic), active at low concentrations, and is removable with carbon.

There is more than a four-fold concentration gap between the minimal therapeutic dose (0.2 mg/L) and the toxic dose (0.8 mg/L). Cupramine™ is easily removable with chemical filtration. It is highly effective and safe in freshwater as well as marine water.

Seachem Cupramine

Precise Copper Treatment for External Parasites

Seachem Cupramine is a highly effective copper-based medication designed for the treatment of external parasites in both marine and freshwater aquariums, including Ichthyophthirius (Ich), Oodinium (Velvet), and Amyloodinium. Its chemically complexed copper formulation makes it safer for fish than traditional copper treatments, maintaining therapeutic efficacy while minimizing stress and toxicity.

Cupramine is ideal for aquarists who require precise control over copper dosing, providing consistent and reliable treatment for parasite infestations while ensuring fish health and recovery.

💡 Why You’ll Love It

  • 🧪 Highly Effective Against External Parasites – Treats Ich, Velvet, and other protozoan infections.

  • 🐟 Safer for Fish – Copper is complexed for stability and reduced toxicity.

  • 💧 Marine & Freshwater Compatible – Can be used in both environments, with dosage adjustments.

  • 🔬 Precise Monitoring Recommended – Works best with a Salifert Copper Test Kit or equivalent to measure copper levels accurately.

  • ⚙️ Removable After Treatment – Copper can be removed with activated carbon or CupriSorb™.

  • ⚠️ Professional-Grade Control – Provides a stable therapeutic window for reliable results.

⚗️ Dosage & Treatment Instructions

Preparation:

  • Use only in a quarantine or hospital tank. Copper is toxic to invertebrates, corals, and plants.

  • Remove invertebrates and sensitive animals from the treatment tank.

  • Turn off or remove chemical filtration (activated carbon, Purigen, etc.) and any UV or ozone devices.

  • Maintain proper aeration and monitor water quality closely.

Dosage:

  • Marine Tanks: 1 mL per 40 L (10.5 US gallons) for the first dose. Wait 48 hours, then repeat to maintain 0.5 mg/L copper throughout the 14-day treatment period.

  • Freshwater Tanks: Use half the marine dose per 40 L (0.25 mg/L) for the 14-day period. Repeat dose at 48 hours if required.

Monitoring:

  • Use a reliable copper test kit, such as the Salifert Copper Test Kit, to ensure therapeutic copper levels remain stable.

  • Maintain consistent copper levels for the full 14-day treatment cycle to ensure parasites are completely eliminated.

After Treatment:

  • Remove Cupramine using activated carbon or CupriSorb™.

  • Perform partial water changes to ensure residual copper is removed before returning fish to the main display tank.

⚠️ Important Warnings

  • Display Tank Use: Copper must never be used in a display tank containing corals, invertebrates, or live plants.

  • Toxicity: Copper is lethal to shrimp, snails, corals, and many beneficial invertebrates.

  • Contamination Risk: Porous decor, rocks, and substrate may retain copper residues — always treat in a separate hospital tank.

  • Monitoring is Critical: Accurate measurement with a copper test kit is essential to avoid overdosing or ineffective treatment.

🌿 Aquarist Insight

Copper is one of the most effective treatments for external parasites, but precision is key. Underdosing may allow parasites to survive, while overdosing can seriously harm or kill fish. Cupramine provides stability and predictability, allowing hobbyists to safely administer copper with confidence.

Paired with a Salifert Copper Test Kit, aquarists can track copper levels accurately, ensuring the treatment is both effective and safe. By carefully monitoring and maintaining therapeutic copper levels, fish recover faster and with less stress.
