Description
❄️ Phospha-Guard GFH DARK-ICE – High-Performance Phosphate & Metal Remover
Phospha-Guard GFH DARK-ICE is an advanced granulated ferric hydroxide media specifically formulated to extract phosphate (PO₄), silicate, and heavy metals from both freshwater and marine aquariums. With a massive surface area of 300m² per gram, DARK-ICE delivers superior absorption capacity—perfect for maintaining ultra-low nutrient environments in reef and planted tanks.
Designed for long-term performance and safety, it binds contaminants permanently, eliminating the risk of leaching. Plus, it’s reusable up to 3 times with Phospha-Guard RE-CYCLE, making it both effective and economical.
🌟 Key Benefits
🧲 Powerful Phosphate & Silicate Removal
Rapidly pulls out phosphates, silicates, and toxic metals from your water column—ideal for coral-heavy reef tanks and overstocked freshwater systems.
🧬 Zero Leaching Guaranteed
Phosphates bond securely to the DARK-ICE granules and won’t be released back, even over time.
💧 Safe for All Aquarium Life
Does not affect pH or alkalinity—perfect for sensitive reef and planted aquariums.
🐚 Accelerates Coral Growth
By eliminating phosphate inhibition, it helps improve calcification and tissue development in SPS and LPS corals.
🌿 Controls Algae at the Source
Reduces nutrients that fuel algae growth, helping prevent outbreaks of hair algae, cyano, and green dust algae.
♻️ Regenerable Media
Can be reused up to three times with Phospha-Guard RE-CYCLE, reducing waste and replacement cost.

⚙️ Phospha‑Guard GFH DARK‑ICE Reactor Setup Guide
1. Choose a Suitable Reactor
Opt for a fluidized media reactor for optimal performance. These reactors gently tumble the media, maximizing water contact and preventing clumping
Compact reactors like the AquaMaxx or Two Little Fishies PhosBan models work well for most tanks.
2. Rinse the Media
Before use, rinse the DARK‑ICE granules thoroughly with RO/DI water until the rinse water runs clear. This removes dust and fines that can cloud the tank
3. Load the Reactor
Add the granules into the reactor’s chamber—do not overfill. Leave some space so the media can move freely with water flow
4. Set Initial Flow
Start with a low flow rate to gently tumble the granules. Visualize a slow “rolling boil”—media should move just enough to avoid compacting or grinding
5. Install the Reactor
Place it in a high-flow area of your sump or filtration loop, such as before or after the protein skimmer. Ensure water flows through the media effectively—reactors are more efficient than passive media bags
6. Monitor Phosphate Levels
Test regularly (e.g. weekly). If phosphate levels don’t drop below your target range, slowly increase flow or add more media according to the tank’s needs
7. Regenerate the Media
When phosphate levels rise again, use Phospha‑Guard RE‑CYCLE to regenerate the media—up to three times—before needing replacement. This maintains performance and reduces costs.
🛠️ Tips for Optimal Performance
Tip | Description |
---|---|
Avoid Dust | Always rinse before use to prevent dust-related issues |
Correct Flow | Gentle tumbling is key—too much flow grinds media; too little causes channeling |
Media Quantity | A good starting point is ~1 tbsp GFO per 4 gal. Adjust as needed |
Reactor Maintenance | Clean the reactor during media changes to maintain flow efficiency |
✅ Quick Setup Checklist
-
Rinse GRH media thoroughly
-
Add to reactor chamber, leaving space
-
Begin with low, gentle flow
-
Position reactor in high-flow zone
-
Test phosphate levels weekly
-
Regenerate or replace as needed
