Description

Midas Blenny (Ecsenius midas)

The Midas Blenny is one of the most charismatic and visually striking blennies available in the marine aquarium trade. Known for its brilliant golden-yellow coloration and eel-like swimming style, this species stands out among reef fish for both its appearance and behaviour. Unlike many blennies that perch on rocks, the Midas Blenny spends much of its time swimming in the open water column, gliding gracefully through the aquarium.

Native to the Indo-Pacific region, Midas Blennies are typically found on reef slopes where they hover near rock crevices and coral structures. In the wild, they often live in burrows or small caves, darting in and out while feeding on plankton drifting through the water column. In captivity, this behaviour translates into an active, curious fish that quickly becomes a focal point of the aquarium.

Their peaceful temperament and reef-safe nature make them an excellent addition to established marine aquariums, particularly reef systems with plenty of rockwork for shelter.

Why You’ll Love the Midas Blenny

  • Brilliant golden-yellow to orange coloration

  • Unique eel-like swimming behaviour

  • Active mid-water swimmer rather than a rock-perching blenny

  • Peaceful and reef safe with most tank mates

  • Full of personality and often very interactive with aquarists

Appearance & Behaviour

Midas Blennies grow to around 12–15 cm as adults. Their elongated bodies and flowing dorsal fins give them a graceful appearance as they swim through the tank. While most individuals display a bright golden colour, some may show subtle variations ranging from pale yellow to deeper amber tones depending on mood, lighting, and environment.

Unlike many blennies that remain close to the substrate, the Midas Blenny behaves more like an open-water swimmer, frequently hovering above rockwork or weaving through caves. Despite their active swimming style, they still require a secure hiding place and will often retreat to a favourite cave when startled or resting.

They are generally peaceful but may become territorial toward fish with very similar body shapes, especially other blennies in smaller aquariums.

Tank Requirements & Care

Midas Blennies thrive in established marine aquariums with stable water conditions and plenty of rock structures.

Tank Size:
Minimum 200 litres

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–27°C
pH: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: 1.023–1.025

Environment:

  • Live rock with caves or crevices for shelter

  • Moderate water flow

  • Open swimming space in the mid-water column

  • Secure lid, as they can jump when startled

A mature tank with stable parameters helps ensure long-term health and vibrant coloration.

Feeding

In the wild, Midas Blennies feed primarily on zooplankton drifting in the water column.

In captivity they readily accept:

  • Frozen mysis shrimp

  • Brine shrimp

  • Finely chopped seafood

  • High-quality marine pellets and flakes

Feeding small portions 1–2 times daily helps maintain energy levels and healthy colour.

Reef Compatibility

Midas Blennies are considered reef safe and generally do not disturb corals or ornamental invertebrates.

They coexist well with:

  • Clownfish

  • Tangs

  • Gobies

  • Wrasses

  • Peaceful angelfish and reef fish

Avoid aggressive or highly territorial fish that may bully them or compete for hiding spaces.

Midas Blenny Tankmate Compatibility Guide

While generally peaceful, the Midas Blenny can occasionally show territorial behaviour toward fish with a similar shape or niche. Proper tank size, rockwork, and thoughtful stocking help ensure compatibility with other blennies and reef fish.

Highfin Fangblenny (Meiacanthus sp.)

Compatibility: Usually Compatible

Both species are active swimmers that spend time in the water column rather than staying strictly on rocks. In larger aquariums they usually coexist peacefully.

Recommended conditions

  • Tank size 250 litres or larger

  • Plenty of rockwork and caves

  • Introduce both species carefully to reduce territorial behaviour

Lawnmower Blenny (Salarias fasciatus)

Compatibility: Very Compatible

Lawnmower Blennies spend most of their time grazing algae on rocks and substrate. Because they occupy a completely different niche from the Midas Blenny, conflict is very unlikely.

Benefits of pairing

  • Different feeding habits

  • Different territory zones

  • Complementary roles in reef aquariums

Bicolor Blenny (Ecsenius bicolor)

Compatibility: Moderate Compatibility

Because both fish belong to the Ecsenius genus and share a similar body shape, some territorial behaviour may occur, particularly in smaller aquariums.

To improve success

  • Tank size above 250 litres

  • Multiple rock caves and hiding spots

  • Introduce both fish simultaneously if possible

Flame Tail Blenny (Ecsenius sp.)

Compatibility: Moderate Compatibility

Flame Tail Blennies can be mildly territorial toward similar species. While many aquarists successfully keep them with Midas Blennies, sufficient space and territories are important.

Tips for success

  • Provide several caves or rock structures

  • Avoid overcrowding blenny species

  • Monitor behaviour during initial introduction

General Tips for Keeping Multiple Blennies

1. Provide abundant rockwork
Blennies rely heavily on caves and crevices for security.

2. Maintain adequate tank size
Larger aquariums reduce territorial conflicts.

3. Introduce fish carefully
Adding multiple blennies at the same time often reduces aggression.

4. Observe early behaviour
Most territorial disputes occur within the first few days after introduction.

Quick Compatibility Summary

Species Compatibility with Midas Blenny Notes
Highfin Fangblenny Usually compatible Both mid-water swimmers
Lawnmower Blenny Very compatible Different feeding behaviour
Bicolor Blenny Moderate compatibility Same genus may cause territoriality
Flame Tail Blenny Moderate compatibility Provide adequate rockwork

Overall Verdict:
The Midas Blenny can be kept with several other blenny species when housed in a sufficiently large aquarium with plenty of hiding places. Choosing species that occupy different areas of the tank greatly increases the chances of long-term compatibility.
