Description
Bicolor Blenny (Ecsenius bicolor)
The Bicolor Blenny is a striking and charismatic marine fish prized for its vibrant two-tone coloration and active personality. True to its name, this species displays a distinct contrast between a dark front half and a bright yellow or orange rear half, making it one of the most visually appealing blennies for reef aquariums.
Native to the Indo-Pacific region, Bicolor Blennies inhabit shallow reef slopes and lagoons, often perching on rocks and corals while keeping a watchful eye on their surroundings. In the home aquarium, they are bottom- to mid-level swimmers, frequently hopping between rocks and crevices while feeding on algae, biofilm, and small invertebrates.
This species is hardy, reef safe, and well-suited to both beginner and experienced aquarists looking for an active, colourful, and personable blenny for their marine tank.
Why You’ll Love the Bicolor Blenny
-
Bold two-tone coloration: dark front, bright yellow/orange rear
-
Active and curious personality, often exploring rockwork
-
Hardy and reef safe, compatible with most invertebrates and corals
-
Efficient algae grazer, contributing to clean rock surfaces

Appearance & Behaviour
Adults grow to about 10–12 cm, with an elongated body and a slightly compressed profile. The striking bicolor pattern makes them instantly recognisable in a reef setup.
Bicolor Blennies are generally peaceful but can be territorial, especially toward other blennies or fish of similar size and shape. They often stake out a preferred rock or crevice as their “home base” while patrolling nearby areas for food.
