Description

Bicolor Angelfish (Centropyge bicolor)

The Bicolor Angelfish is one of the most recognisable dwarf marine angelfish, celebrated for its dramatic two-tone body — electric royal blue on the rear half and vibrant golden yellow on the front. Bold, active, and full of personality, this species makes a striking addition to established marine aquariums where colour contrast and movement are key.

Native to the Indo-Pacific, Bicolor Angelfish are commonly found around coral reefs and rocky outcrops where they graze on algae, sponges, and small invertebrates. While undeniably beautiful, they are best suited to aquarists with some marine experience due to their dietary needs and occasional reef compatibility concerns.

💛💙 Why You’ll Love the Bicolor Angelfish

  • 🎨 Stunning half-yellow, half-blue coloration

  • 👑 Classic dwarf angelfish personality

  • 🌊 Active swimmer that explores rockwork

  • 🪸 Adds bold contrast to reef or FOWLR systems

  • ✨ True statement fish for marine displays

🐠 Appearance & Behaviour

Bicolor Angelfish grow to around 15 cm as adults, making them one of the larger dwarf angelfish species. Their body is cleanly divided into two striking colours — a golden-yellow front half and deep cobalt blue rear half — with a bright blue outline along the dorsal and anal fins.

They are active, curious fish that spend much of their time weaving through live rock, grazing and investigating crevices. While generally semi-aggressive, they can become territorial toward other dwarf angelfish or similarly shaped species.

Best kept:

  • Singly in most systems

  • Or carefully paired in larger aquariums

They typically coexist well with tangs, clownfish, wrasses, and other moderately assertive marine species.

🏡 Tank Requirements & Care

Bicolor Angelfish require a stable, mature marine aquarium with excellent water quality.

Tank Size:

  • Minimum 250–300 litres

  • Larger tanks recommended for mixed communities

Water Parameters:

  • 🌡 Temperature: 24–27°C

  • 💧 pH: 8.1–8.4

  • 🌊 Salinity: 1.023–1.025

  • Strong filtration and protein skimming essential

Provide plenty of live rock for grazing, shelter, and territory establishment. A well-structured aquascape reduces aggression and stress.

🍽 Feeding

In the wild, Bicolor Angelfish feed heavily on sponges and algae, which can make long-term feeding success challenging without a varied diet.

Offer:

  • High-quality marine angelfish preparations (sponge-based foods)

  • Spirulina flakes or pellets

  • Frozen mysis shrimp

  • Finely chopped seafood

  • Marine algae sheets

Feed small portions 2–3 times daily for optimal health and colour retention.

🪸 Reef Compatibility

  • LPS corals

  • Soft corals

  • Zoanthids

  • Clams

Some individuals behave perfectly in reefs, while others may develop a taste for coral polyps. They are often safer in Fish Only With Live Rock (FOWLR) systems.
