Description

Lobophytum Leather Coral

Lobophytum Leather Coral, commonly known as Devil’s Hand or Finger Leather Coral, is a hardy and elegant soft coral that brings natural reef movement and structure into marine aquariums. Recognised by its thick, lobed “finger-like” projections and smooth, leathery surface, Lobophytum creates a bold yet calming presence in both beginner and advanced reef systems.

When polyps are extended, the coral develops a soft, fuzzy appearance as thousands of tiny tentacles sway gently in the current. Under blue lighting, subtle green or cream hues glow beautifully, adding depth without overpowering other corals in your aquascape.

Because it is a soft coral, Lobophytum does not require calcium supplementation at the same level as stony corals, making it an excellent choice for reef keepers seeking lower-maintenance livestock with impressive visual impact.

Care & Placement 🧪✨

Lighting:

  • Moderate lighting preferred

  • Adapts to lower light but shows better polyp extension under moderate LED lighting

Water Flow:

  • Moderate, turbulent flow

  • Helps keep the surface clean and encourages full polyp extension

Placement:

  • Mid to upper rockwork

  • Allow space around the colony for expansion

  • Avoid placing too close to delicate SPS corals

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 24–26°C

  • Salinity: 1.024–1.026

  • Alkalinity: 7.5–9 dKH

  • Stable nitrate and phosphate levels

Lobophytum Leather Coral occasionally undergoes a natural “shedding” phase, where it retracts polyps and forms a thin film over its surface. This is normal and part of its self-cleaning process. Good flow helps it shed efficiently.

Feeding & Growth 🌊🍽️

Lobophytum is primarily photosynthetic but can benefit from:

  • Phytoplankton or fine coral foods

  • Occasional broadcast feeding

Growth is moderate to fast under stable conditions. Over time, it develops thicker lobes and expands outward, creating a natural reef-like canopy effect.

Because it produces mild chemical compounds (allelopathy), running activated carbon in mixed reefs is recommended to maintain water clarity and coral harmony.

Aquascaping Inspiration 🪨✨

Lobophytum Leather Coral works beautifully as a mid-level feature coral, creating height and flow without rigid structure. It pairs well with mushrooms, zoanthids, and LPS corals, offering contrast between soft, waving polyps and fleshy or stony textures.

In larger reef tanks, it can serve as a natural “reef crest” focal point, especially when positioned where flow allows its polyps to move gracefully.
