Description
Cynarina Lacrymalis Red
Cynarina lacrymalis Red, commonly known as the Red Meat Coral, is one of the most striking and sought-after large polyp stony (LPS) corals in the reef hobby. Known for its massive, fleshy polyp and deep glowing red coloration, this coral becomes an instant focal point in any reef aquarium. When fully expanded, the coral inflates dramatically, forming a smooth, rounded appearance that resembles a living jewel resting on the reef floor.
Under blue or actinic lighting, the rich red tones intensify and may display subtle fluorescent highlights, giving the coral an almost glowing effect. Its large, flowing tissue and slow, rhythmic movement create a calming presence in the aquarium while adding bold colour and texture to the aquascape.
Because of its size and fleshy tissue, Cynarina lacrymalis is best displayed on the sand bed where it can fully expand without contact from surrounding rockwork.
Why You’ll Love Cynarina lacrymalis Red
-
Deep, vibrant red coloration that glows under reef lighting
-
Large fleshy polyp that expands dramatically during the day
-
Stunning centrepiece coral for sand bed placement
-
Relatively hardy when kept in stable reef systems
-
Unique and highly collectible LPS species
Few corals offer the same combination of colour intensity and dramatic expansion that the Red Cynarina provides. Its solitary growth form makes it perfect as a statement coral.
Care & Placement
Lighting:
Low to moderate lighting is ideal. Strong direct lighting may cause the coral to retract or bleach, so placement in a slightly shaded area often produces the best results.
Water Flow:
Low to gentle water movement is preferred. Strong flow can irritate the fleshy tissue and prevent the coral from fully inflating.
Placement:
Best placed directly on the sand bed where it can expand safely. Avoid placing it on sharp rock surfaces, as the delicate tissue can easily become damaged.
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 24–26°C
-
Salinity: 1.024–1.026
-
Alkalinity: 8–9 dKH
-
Calcium: 400–450 ppm
-
Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm
-
Nitrate: Low to moderate levels
Stable parameters are critical, as large fleshy LPS corals respond poorly to sudden fluctuations.
Feeding & Growth
Although Cynarina lacrymalis contains symbiotic zooxanthellae and gains energy from lighting, it benefits significantly from occasional target feeding.
Suitable foods include:
-
Mysis shrimp
-
Small pieces of marine meaty foods
-
LPS pellets or coral blends
Feeding once or twice per week can encourage stronger tissue expansion and improved coloration. Feeding responses are often most noticeable after lights dim in the evening.
Growth is slow, as this coral typically remains a single large polyp that gradually increases in size rather than forming colonies.
Aquascaping Inspiration
Red Cynarina is best used as a sand bed showpiece coral. Its rounded shape contrasts beautifully with branching corals, plating corals, and encrusting species. Many reef keepers place it in open areas of the aquascape where it can fully inflate and become a visual centrepiece.
The glowing red colour also provides excellent contrast against green, blue, or purple corals, creating a balanced and vibrant reef display.
