Description

Ramshorn Snails (Planorbidae sp.)

Add natural balance and charm to your freshwater aquarium with Ramshorn Snails, one of the most popular and beneficial clean-up crew species in the hobby. With their distinctive coiled shells and hardy nature, Ramshorns are loved by aquarists for their algae-eating abilities, low maintenance care, and usefulness in both display tanks and breeding setups.

🐌 Appearance & Behaviour
Ramshorn Snails are named after their spiral shells, which resemble a coiled ram’s horn. They come in a variety of colours, including brown, blue, and red, with the red morph being particularly striking in planted tanks. Active throughout the day and night, these snails are constantly grazing surfaces, plants, and glass, helping to keep aquariums clean while adding natural movement to the ecosystem.

Key Benefits at a Glance:

  • ✔️ Natural Algae Control – Grazes on algae and biofilm, reducing maintenance.

  • ✔️ Great Clean-Up Crew – Consumes leftover food and decaying plant matter.

  • ✔️ Peaceful & Non-Aggressive – Completely safe with fish, shrimp, and plants.

  • ✔️ Beginner-Friendly – Extremely hardy and easy to care for.

  • ✔️ Beautiful Variants – Available in multiple colour morphs.

🌿 Tank Role & Uses
Ramshorns are valued not only for their algae-cleaning abilities but also for their role in breaking down detritus. By consuming waste and debris, they help improve water quality and reduce the build-up of organics. In breeding tanks, Ramshorns are often kept as “indicator species” — their health and behaviour can reflect water quality, making them useful for monitoring.

💡 Care Requirements

  • Tank Size: Suitable for nano tanks to large aquariums.

  • Water Temperature: 18–28°C

  • pH: 6.5–7.8

  • Hardness: Medium to hard water preferred (for healthy shell growth).

  • Diet: Algae, leftover fish food, blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach), and sinking pellets.

🌊 Aquarium Placement
Ramshorns are not selective — they will graze on glass, substrate, décor, and live plants. They are excellent for planted aquariums, but note that in tanks with very delicate plants or heavy populations, they may nibble on softer leaves if underfed.

🐠 Tank Mates
Peaceful and non-aggressive, Ramshorn Snails make excellent tank mates for most community setups. They coexist well with shrimp, tetras, rasboras, bettas, and other small to medium fish. Avoid housing them with snail-eating species such as puffers, loaches, or assassin snails, as these will prey on them.

🌱 Breeding
Ramshorns reproduce easily in aquariums by laying clusters of eggs on glass, plants, or decorations. Populations may increase quickly if food is abundant, which can be an advantage in breeding tanks or shrimp colonies but may need to be managed in display aquariums. Reducing feeding will naturally control their numbers.

Why Add Ramshorn Snails?
They are more than just algae-eaters — Ramshorns play a key role in maintaining aquarium cleanliness and balance. Hardy, attractive, and endlessly active, they make a functional and fascinating addition to freshwater tanks of all sizes.

👉 Introduce Ramshorn Snails to your aquarium and enjoy a natural, low-maintenance clean-up crew that supports the health and beauty of your tank.
