Filter Media Selection Guide for Qanvee Bio Sponge Filters

The Qanvee Bio Sponge Filter is compatible with a wide variety of filter media types, enabling you to customize the filtration based on your aquarium’s needs. Below is a breakdown of different filter media options and their functions:

🔄 Mechanical Filtration (Traps Debris)

These media physically capture particles such as uneaten food, plant matter, and fish waste.

  • Filter Sponge (pre-installed)
    • Fine or coarse sponge layers that catch debris.
    • Also provides surface area for beneficial bacteria.
  • Filter Floss or Poly Pads
    • Optional addition to catch finer particles.
    • Replace frequently to maintain efficiency.

♻️ Biological Filtration (Breaks Down Waste)

These media support colonization of beneficial nitrifying bacteria that convert toxic ammonia and nitrites into less harmful nitrates.

  • Ceramic Rings
    • High surface area; excellent for bacterial growth.
    • Place loosely in the media chamber.
  • Bio Balls
    • Lightweight plastic structures designed for biological filtration.
    • Best for high-oxygen environments.
  • Lava Rock (small pieces)
    • Natural, porous rock; supports bacteria colonization.
  • Sintered Glass Media (e.g., Pumice)
    • Very high surface area per volume.
    • Suitable for tanks with high bioloads.

⚖️ Chemical Filtration (Removes Impurities)

Used to remove specific substances like odors, toxins, or discoloration.

  • Activated Carbon
    • Removes tannins, medications, and odors.
    • Replace every 2-4 weeks.
  • Zeolite
    • Absorbs ammonia; ideal for new tanks or emergencies.
    • Use with caution in established tanks to avoid ammonia spikes.
  • Phosphate Removers (e.g., GFH)
    • Controls algae by removing phosphate.
    • Ideal for planted or marine tanks.
  • Organic Waste Absorbers (e.g., ORGAN-EX)
    • Removes tannins and other dissolved organics.
    • Regenerable and long-lasting.

🌍 Recommended Media Combinations

For Shrimp or Nano Tanks (<50L):

  • QS100A
    • Sponge + Ceramic Rings or Lava Rock
    • Optional: Zeolite (if new setup)

For Heavily Stocked Community Tanks (50-100L):

  • QS200A
    • Sponge + Bio Balls
    • Optional: Activated Carbon or Phosphate Remover

For Planted Tanks:

  • Sponge + Ceramic Rings
    • Optional: Phosphate Remover
    • Avoid Activated Carbon if using liquid fertilizers

For Breeding or Fry Tanks:

  • Sponge only or Sponge + Fine Floss
    • No chemical media recommended

⚡ Tips for Best Performance

  • Rinse all new media in dechlorinated water before use.
  • Do not overfill the media chamber; allow water flow.
  • Replace or rinse sponge regularly (every 2–4 weeks).
  • Alternate cleaning media to preserve bacterial colonies.

With the right combination of filter media, your Qanvee Bio Sponge Filter can deliver exceptional water clarity and stability in any aquarium setup.
