Description

Splatter Hammer

The Splatter Hammer Coral is a highly sought-after variety of Euphyllia, known for its vibrant, multi-coloured tips that appear “splashed” or marbled across each tentacle. This unique colour pattern often combines shades of green, gold, cream, and sometimes hints of pink or purple, creating a dynamic and eye-catching display under reef lighting.

Like other hammer corals, Splatter Hammer features thick, fleshy tentacles with distinctive hammer- or anchor-shaped tips that sway gently in the current. The flowing movement combined with its unusual colouration makes it a standout centrepiece in both LPS-dominant and mixed reef aquariums.

Under blue or actinic lighting, the colours intensify dramatically, with the splatter effect becoming more pronounced and fluorescent. This coral not only adds colour but also brings natural motion and depth to your aquascape.

Why You’ll Love Splatter Hammer Coral

  • Unique multi-colour “splatter” pattern on tentacle tips
  • Beautiful flowing movement in the current
  • Strong fluorescence under blue lighting
  • Excellent centrepiece coral for reef tanks
  • Compatible with other Euphyllia species (with care)

Splatter Hammer Coral is ideal for reef keepers looking to add both motion and bold, unusual colouration to their aquarium.

Care & Placement

Lighting:
Moderate lighting is ideal. It adapts well to most reef lighting systems but should be acclimated slowly to higher intensity lighting.

Water Flow:
Low to moderate, indirect flow is best. Tentacles should sway gently — strong, direct flow can damage the tissue or prevent proper extension.

Placement:
Best placed on mid to lower rockwork with enough space around it. While it can be kept near other Euphyllia, it should be given space from different coral species due to its sweeper tentacles.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 24–26°C
  • Salinity: 1.024–1.026
  • Alkalinity: 8–9 dKH
  • Calcium: 400–450 ppm
  • Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm
  • Nitrate: Low to moderate
  • Phosphate: Stable, low levels

Consistency is important, as Euphyllia corals respond best to stable reef conditions.

Feeding & Growth

Splatter Hammer Coral is photosynthetic but benefits from occasional feeding to enhance growth and colour intensity.

Recommended foods:

  • Mysis shrimp
  • Brine shrimp
  • LPS pellets or coral foods

Feeding once or twice per week can promote fuller polyp extension and stronger growth. Feeding responses are often most visible when the coral’s tentacles are fully extended.

Growth is moderate, with the coral forming either branching heads or wall structures depending on the specific specimen.

Aquascaping Inspiration

Splatter Hammer Coral works beautifully as a feature coral in mid-level aquascapes, where its movement and colour can be fully appreciated. It pairs well with other Euphyllia species like torches and frogspawn, creating a flowing “garden” effect.

Its mixed colours also make it an excellent contrast coral when placed near solid-colour species such as greens, purples, or blues.
