Description
Radiant Wrasse (Halichoeres iridis)
The Radiant Wrasse is one of the most colourful and elegant wrasses available for reef aquariums. Known for its brilliant combination of orange, red, yellow, and blue markings, this species lives up to its name by bringing vibrant movement and striking colour to marine aquariums.
Native to the Indo-Pacific, Radiant Wrasses inhabit reef slopes and sandy lagoon areas where they actively hunt for small invertebrates among rocks and substrate. In the home aquarium, they display the same energetic behaviour—constantly exploring rockwork and sand while searching for food. Their curious nature and graceful swimming style make them a captivating fish to observe throughout the day.
Radiant Wrasses are part of the Halichoeres genus, which are known for being hardy and relatively reef safe. They are also beneficial in reef tanks because they may help control pests such as small bristleworms, flatworms, and other nuisance invertebrates.
Because they bury themselves in sand at night or when frightened, a soft sand substrate is essential for their wellbeing.
Why You’ll Love the Radiant Wrasse
-
Stunning orange and red coloration with blue highlights
-
Active swimmer that constantly explores the aquarium
-
May help control small pests and nuisance invertebrates
-
Hardy and adaptable once acclimated
-
Reef safe with most corals
Appearance & Behaviour
Radiant Wrasses typically grow to around 10–13 cm in length. Their bodies display vivid orange and red tones with delicate blue striping and patterning that becomes more pronounced as they mature.
They are active daytime swimmers, frequently weaving through rock structures and investigating crevices for food. At night or when startled, they bury themselves in the sand, which is a natural behaviour for many Halichoeres wrasses.
Radiant Wrasses are generally peaceful but may occasionally show dominance toward very small or timid fish. They are best kept singly unless housed in very large aquariums.
Tank Requirements & Care
Radiant Wrasses do best in established marine aquariums with stable water conditions and plenty of rockwork.
Tank Size:
Minimum 200 litres
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–27°C
pH: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: 1.023–1.025
Environment
-
Soft sand substrate for burrowing
-
Plenty of live rock with hiding spaces
-
Moderate to strong water flow
-
Secure lid, as wrasses may jump
A mature tank with stable conditions and a healthy microfauna population will help them thrive.
Feeding
Radiant Wrasses are carnivorous hunters that feed on small invertebrates in the wild.
In aquariums they accept a variety of foods including:
-
Frozen mysis shrimp
-
Brine shrimp
-
Finely chopped seafood
-
High-quality marine pellets and flakes
Feeding small portions 1–2 times daily helps maintain vibrant coloration and energy.
Reef Compatibility
Radiant Wrasses are generally reef safe and do not harm corals. However, they may prey on very small ornamental invertebrates.
They typically coexist well with:
-
Clownfish
-
Tangs
-
Gobies
-
Blennies
-
Dwarf angelfish
-
Other peaceful reef fish
Use caution with very small shrimp, tiny crabs, or ornamental micro-invertebrates, as they may occasionally be eaten.

Radiant Wrasse Compatibility with Other Popular Wrasses
| Wrasse Species | Scientific Name | Compatibility with Radiant Wrasse | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sixline Wrasse | Pseudocheilinus hexataenia | Caution | Sixlines can be quite territorial and may bully other wrasses, especially in smaller tanks. Best attempted only in larger aquariums with plenty of rockwork and hiding spaces. |
| Melanarus Wrasse | Halichoeres melanurus | Usually Compatible | Both belong to the Halichoeres genus and generally coexist well in larger aquariums. Provide a sand bed and adequate swimming space. |
| Canary Wrasse | Halichoeres chrysus | Very Compatible | Peaceful and similar in temperament. Often mixes well with Radiant Wrasses in established reef tanks with sand substrate. |
| Cleaner Wrasse | Labroides dimidiatus | Usually Compatible | Cleaner Wrasses focus on cleaning behaviour rather than territory. Radiant Wrasses typically ignore them. Success depends more on the cleaner wrasse adapting to prepared foods. |
General Tips for Mixing Wrasses
-
Provide a soft sand substrate for Halichoeres species to bury in.
-
Introduce wrasses simultaneously or the most peaceful species first to reduce territorial disputes.
-
Maintain larger tanks (200+ litres) with plenty of rockwork and swimming space.
-
Use a secure lid, as wrasses are known jumpers.
This combination can work well in established reef aquariums when adequate space and hiding spots are provided.
