Anubias Spear Large
Bring bold greenery and effortless style to your aquarium with the Anubias Spear Large, a hardy, slow-growing plant that has become a favourite among aquascapers and hobbyists worldwide. With its broad spear-shaped leaves, deep green colour, and durable nature, this Anubias variety makes an impressive statement in both freshwater aquariums and aquascaped displays.
🌿 Appearance & Growth
Anubias Spear Large features elongated spear-like leaves that grow thick and leathery, making them resistant to nibbling fish and long-lasting under varied conditions. The rich green foliage adds a strong contrast to finer-leaved plants and creates an elegant mid-ground or focal feature. As a large-sized plant, it works beautifully in medium to large aquariums where its presence can anchor a scape.
This plant is known for its slow but steady growth, making it a low-maintenance option for aquarists who prefer stability and longevity in their aquascapes.
✨ Key Benefits at a Glance:
-
✔️ Large, Striking Leaves – Bold spear-shaped foliage adds contrast and structure.
-
✔️ Hardy & Forgiving – Tolerates a wide range of aquarium conditions.
-
✔️ Great for Aquascaping – Perfect for mid-ground, hardscape accents, or as a feature plant.
-
✔️ Low Maintenance – Very slow grower, requiring minimal trimming.
-
✔️ Fish-Safe – Thick leaves resist damage from herbivorous or boisterous fish.
💡 Lighting & CO₂ Requirements
Anubias thrive under low to moderate lighting, making them ideal for low-tech tanks. Too much light can cause algae to grow on the leaves, so shaded or indirect areas are preferred. CO₂ supplementation is not required but can enhance growth in high-tech setups.
🌊 Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 20–28°C
-
pH: 6.0–7.5
-
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water
-
Placement: Mid-ground or attached to hardscape
🍂 Planting & Care
Anubias should not be buried in substrate — burying the rhizome can cause it to rot. Instead, attach it to driftwood, rocks, or other hardscape using thread, cable ties, or aquarium-safe glue. Over time, the rhizome will naturally grip the surface. Leaves grow slowly, but once established, the plant can live for many years with little attention.
-
Trim dead or algae-covered leaves as needed.
-
Avoid placing under very strong direct lighting.
-
Propagate by cutting and replanting rhizome sections with at least 3–4 leaves.
🐠 Tank Mates
Anubias Spear is one of the most fish-proof plants available. Its thick leaves are rarely eaten by herbivorous fish, making it ideal for tanks with cichlids, goldfish, or other plant-nipping species. Shrimp also enjoy grazing biofilm from its leaf surfaces without harming the plant.
